BIO The Roulettes were born in an Oberlin, Ohio basement, where they practiced
on borrowed equipment next to a leaky washer/dryer combo. They grew up playing
in basements and living rooms to crowds of adoring fans and a few aghast fools
who didn’t get their jokes. After moving to Portland, the Roulettes
met up with Lucky Madison as the first ever LM release with their self-titled
EP. Roulettes songs are sarcastic, playful and occasionally sincere. The EP
finds the Roulettes bouncing from the pressing issues of yesteryear (film
students with dinosaur-sized egos on “Crabs”) to love as seen
from a creaky Ferris wheel (“Motorcycles in the Mist”) to straight
up hot shit dance tracks (“Hot Ticket”) faster than you can pour
another bourbon.
The unreleased Roulettes tracks saw them moving into darker territory with
songs like “2:1,” “Do it Again”, and their untitled
meditation on volcanoes and WMDs. Not kidding! But the Roulettes maintained
their sense of humor and continued to pay tribute to pitchers and popcorn,
nights at Chopsticks, the Fred Meyer Can-Do Machine, and the ever-popular
montecristo sandwich.
Two of the best Roulettes booking stories: A Portland booker called and said
he was banging his head against the wall after listening to Odessa because
he couldn’t get over the cries of “bloody mary baby”. In
NYC, while flyering at infamous ladies bar Meow Mix, the bartender/booker
asked “Why aren’t you playing here?” So las Roulettes returned
to Meow Mix a few days later for one of their best early shows.
April 18, 2009, will see the Roulettes reunite at Cakeshop in New York City,
after a brief preview show in February at which they (inadvertently) blew
up the rental PA. It may be a one off, or they may be off and running again.
You better recognize.
PRESS "There is something at the core of The Roulettes' debut album that
hints at great things to come...these ladies could become this city's queens
of rock." - Alex Valdivieso, Willamette Week 2/4/04
“Their basement-born band is taking Portland's most debonair dives by
storm with their carefree, punked-up sound.” - Mark Baumgarten, Willamette Week, Spring Fashion Issue, 2004
